Human Biomonitoring of Endocrine Disruptors (Phthalates)

The scientific team is focused on human biomonitoring of environmental endocrine disruptors (phthalates) in biological matrices. The aim of the research is to assess the environmental exposure and toxicity of phthalates in various types of working and teaching environments with different environmental loads, ages, and sexual characteristics, as well as from different geographical and socio-economic areas from the territory of the Slovak Republic.

The team realizes their activity in a specialized analytical laboratory for liquid chromatography and, tandem mass spectrometry, physiometry.

The research team has obtained internationally accepted quality control certificates for the German External Quality Scheme for toxicological analyzes in biological material: program 52/2013; 54/2014; 57/2017; 61/2019 in the environmental-medical field for phthalate metabolites.

The research team was involved in national projects (OPVaV, VEGA, APVV, MZ SR), and currently, they are involved in the international framework project (H2020). The scientific team has published data in the Information Platform for Chemical Monitoring (IPCHEM) on the basis of the scientific activities of membership in the scientific consortium of the European project: The European Human Biomonitoring Initiative (HBM4EU, contract no. 733032) under the Horizon 2020 program. It also succeeded in the first and second rounds of ICI / EQUAS REPORT Phthalates.

The use of internationally validated methodologies for the detection of these substances is unique in the Slovak environment and increases the national and international attractiveness and competitiveness of
the laboratory while also creating conditions for commercial use, the emergence of multidisciplinary scientific teams and project cooperation at the national level.
